Most of the events in the play led the death of Romeo and Juliet. However, who is most responsible for their death? In my personal opinion, I think that the more responsible characters are Tybalt and Lord Capulet.
It all started with Mercutio and Tybalt arguing and fighting with each other's ego. A silly fight that ended with Tybalt killing Mercutio with his sword under Romeo's arm, who was trying to stop the fight and with Mercutio last words, "why the devil came you between us? I was hurt under your arm." (Act 3. Scene 1) Romeo feels guilty and angry and with his young mind and irrational thinking, he kills Tybalt. As a result, the prince decided to exile Romeo from ...view middle of the document...
Speak not. Reply not. Do not answer me. My fingers itch. (Act.3 Scene 5) With these words, Lord Capulet made the worst mistake of his life. He contributed on making her daughter make rush and crazy decisions.
Juliet feeling hopeless and suicidal visits Friar Lawrence for comfort and help. Friar Lawrence trying to help, who at the beginning married the "star-crossed lovers" to finally end the dispute between her families, gives Juliet a potion with the idea of reunite her with Romeo. Nevertheless, the plan did not work well. There was confusion trying to warn Romeo. In addition, both, Romeo and Juliet end up dying.
Tybalt and Lord Capulet are the more responsible for Romeo and Juliet's death. However, Romeo and Friar Lawrence made a significance effect on their decisions.
Romeo should had control his emotions and anger and wait until the Prince decided what to do for Tybalt's crime. Maybe he would have stayed with Juliet and leave Tybalt paying his consequences. Maybe the dispute between their families could end just as Friar Lawrence wanted. However, I do not blame Romeo. He is young and he lost one of his best friends. His anger controlled him and ended with an irrational decision. The same with Friar Lawrence, he made somewhat bad decisions but he just wanted to help Romeo and Juliet be happy and end their families' dispute. Even though his decisions did not end like he wanted at least their death end the dispute between their families.
