Romeo And Juliet Comparison Essay

813 words - 3 pages

The very short and sweet way of comparing William Shakespares's play Romeo and Juliet to the 1996 movie Romeo and Juliet would be as follows. You would take the script from the play, which is what they used in the movie except they played around it a bit and you would upgrade everything. For example; swords to guns; carrages to cars; dresses to pants; suits to t-shirts and a faire city to a beach vibed city. That would be the simpliest way to compare the ancient play to the modern movie, also the laziest.
Romeo and Juliet is a tragic play written by William Shakespare. It tells the story of two star crossed lover as they try to find a place in the world together without dealing with the rivalry of their families. Many reenactments of the play have been made. One of the most popular was a movie that came out in 1996 starring Leonardo Dicaprio and Claire Danes. It was a very accurate representation of the play, yet still differed in many ways. Despite the differences, the main plot of the story was still portrayed to the audeince phenomenaly.
The 1996 Romeo and Juliet had a very different idea on when the movie should take place and gave a complete modern take. It was placed in the present, which at the time was the late 90's. Watching Romeo and Juliet take place during this time gives a very different feel to the play and actual story. The play and actual story take place in the "olden days" better known as Renissance times. You could imagine how the modern day theme of the movie contrast with the Renissacce theme play. It is most definatly a shift. It makes it seem more unrealistic, but also makes it more fun and you can understand the story furthermore.
Although the basic timeline remians the same, the biggest differences can be found in the setting and plot. Shakespeares's famout play Romeo and Juliet is set in an ancient city Verona, Italy. The 1996 movie was set in Verona Beach, a fictional city. The city and everyone in it is very modern and all have a "beachy", relaxed feel to them. When the movie starts there is a tv program on and that should right off the bat tell you that this isnt going to be any Romeo and Juliet story. It is quite funny to...
